| Understanding Carbon Costs International experience shows that once a carbon reduction policies are introduced then all levels of business are affected - even if the initial legislation only applies to large businesses. The CPRS (Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme sometimes called the ETS – Emission Trading Scheme) that is currently being proposed by the Federal Government sets a limit on industry based greenhouse gas emissions, where large polluting companies (approximately 1000) need to buy a permit for every tonne of greenhouse gas that they emit. All Australian businesses however will feel the impact of the CPRS. This is because the CPRS should eventually drive price increases for energy and other emissions-intensive goods and services. Companies need to identify their energy intensive processes or products and take actions to prepare for the challenges posed by these new policies. |
